Rescue stories about dogs and cats are quite common, and we are always happy to tell you about them. However, recently, we came across an unusual and heartwarming rescue story that involves a fish.

In a viral video shared by TikTok user @sharktherescuefish, one person detailed how they came across a fish tank someone left in the alley for garbage collectors to pick up. After taking a closer look, they noticed something was moving; there was still a fish inside.

The person decided to take the fish tank home and clean it so the fish could have a much better home. They also added gems, bought some food for the fish, and found it a perfect place in their house.

“He seems happy now… I’ll buy him some new things soon,” the rescuer shared in the video, which got more than eight million views while revealing that the fish is now called Shark.

Shark’s rescuer later also shared a number of follow-up videos that show the fish enjoying its new home and various upgrades it got for the aquarium, including a filter, some friends to hang out with, and live plants. Check them out below.

You would think that fish would enjoy a frequent cleanup of their living space. But one frogfish named Tadpole recently took an issue with his owner because of it.

A recent viral TikTok video shows Tadpole staring through the aquarium glass and giving a mean look to his owner. It turned out that the owner changed the water and vacuumed the rocks inside the aquarium, which ended up messing up Tadpole’s rock configuration.

“This is probably the equivalent of if someone came into my house and vacuumed my house and rearranged my pillows,” Tadpole’s owner can be heard saying while the fish is looking extremely frustrated.

The video ended up going viral, getting more than seven million views in just a couple of days.

Frogfish are intriguing species that can be found in the majority of tropical and subtropical waters. They are known for their camouflage skills, like Tadpole’s seaweed look, which helps them hide from predators and fool their prey.

They usually don’t move much, and when they do, they prefer to “walk” on the ocean floor. Mostly, they’ll settle in one spot and wait for their prey, which is probably why Tadpole was so annoyed about his comfy zone being disrupted. But when necessary, they can be extremely fast and strike their target in six milliseconds.

Scientists have accidentally created a new hybrid species of fish called sturddlefish. It’s a cross between an American paddlefish and a Russian sturgeon. How did this happen?

The two fish species were not likely to pair. They don’t live close to each other —the sturgeon is native to Russia and nearby regions while the paddlefish lives in the U.S., in the Mississippi River Valley. They don’t eat the same things; sturgeon is carnivorous and likes to eat small fish and crustaceans, while the paddlefish filters zooplankton from water. Both species are large and belong to freshwater fish. This still doesn’t explain how they got crossed to create a new type of fish.

It happened at the Research Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Hungary where scientists have been working on breeding two species of fish. However, one of them accidentally gave paddlefish sperm to sturgeon eggs which lead to hundreds of baby hybrid fish with combined attributes of their parents. If you’re interesting to learn more about the new species they created this way, a study about it has been published in Genes recently.

“We never wanted to play around with hybridization,” the co-author of the study, Dr. Attila Mozsár, told The New York Times. “It was absolutely unintentional.”

When you think of pets, which animal first comes to mind? Chances are you’re thinking about cats and dogs, but they’re not the most popular pets on the planet! In fact, the most popular pet in the world is a fish!

This comes from the 2017 statistics published on Pet Secure. The data also tells us that the most pet fishes live in the USA. 60 million homes have one or more of them! France is second, with 38 million households, followed by Brazil with 25 million households.

Even the second most popular pet result is surprising—it’s birds! 200 Brazilian homes own birds, 13 million homes in Italy have them, and nine million in the USA.

The number of homes with one or more pets has been growing over the past years and is now around 44%, which is truly incredible. Some other popular choices include dogs, cats, reptiles, domestic fowl, hamsters, etc.

Some fish species, like bluehead wrasse, can go from female to male thanks to duplicate genes. This process was described in a recent study that was published in the Science Advances journal.

This species lives in groups. Males are large and dominant leaders of their groups and they defend smaller females. When a male dies or gets eaten, the largest female in the group starts to change sex and takes up his role. She only needs a few minutes to take up the leading roles, in a few days her starts changing color, and around 10 days after, her ovaries turn into testes.

The fish can successfully breed as a female and then breed again as a male after the sex change. In a way, they get “the best of both worlds,” according to the co-first author of the study, Erica Todd, who works as a molecular ecologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

This is the first study that explains what happens in the fish’s body in order to make the change possible, which has been a mystery for decades.

Don’t get fooled by these images; they are not photographs, but realistic-looking paintings made by a South Korean artist. The 46-year-old Young-sung Kim became viral thanks to his hyper-realistic oil paintings of fish swimming in glass bowls and cups.

The artist has been attracted to nature and the living creatures since he was a little boy, and thanks to his admiration his ongoing series called Nothing. Life. Object. was born.

“What is the meaning or value of living organisms in modern civilization?” Kim shared on Saatchi Art. “What is the meaning of living organisms to humans? They exist with us in the same environment, but they are always faced as food or decorative elements in a lower hierarchy.”

The artist had exhibitions all over the world, from Brisbane and New York to Seoul. He also shares his work on his Instagram account where he has attracted almost 200 thousand admirers.

Article on @mymodernmet🐳 South Korean artist Young-sung Kim has made a name for himself thanks to his hyperrealistic oil paintings of fish swimming in glass bowls and cups. Kim uses minuscule brushes to pull out every detail of his subjects, whether it be the colorful tail of a beta fish or the shimmering scales of a goldfish. Painted on large canvases, the animals are laid out like living still lifes for the viewer to admire. The photorealistic paintings are part of Kim’s ongoing series Nothing. Life. Object. that speaks to the disintegration of modern society in the face of the “advanced development of material civilizations.” By juxtaposing living and material things and displaying them as a piece of theater or advertising, Kim wishes to comment on society’s tendency to neglect living organisms. The painter’s fascination with the beauty of living creatures began when he was a child, as they forced him to stop and contemplate their place in the world. It’s easy for us to tell when we’re thirsty. We first experience dry mouth, which can lead to fatigue and lightheadedness, and if we don’t drink water for a very long time, we can start craving it and become unable to think about anything else. But we can’t know if fish experience thirst. “I think of thirst as a cognitive response to hydration and it’s hard to get inside a fish’s brain,” Boston College assistant biology professor Christopher Kenaley told the outlet. One thing is sure — without hydration, fish would die. They use a process called osmoregulation to regulate water balance.

The process is not the same for saltwater and freshwater fish, but their bodies are perfectly capable to maintain a healthy relation of blood and salt at all times.

We humans often have the tendency to forget that we’re alone on this planet. There are other living creatures that we often forget about or even worse, use them for our own purpose. This is an important issue that South Korean artist Young-sung Kim is trying to address in his work.

His oil paintings from the series called “Nothing. Life. Object.” look so realistic and lifelike, just like the problems he’s trying to show to the world. From fish trapped in glass bowls to frogs captured in jars, Kim’s paintings are representing a cruel and painful reality. He thinks that modern society is often forgetting about other living organisms, as a result of “advanced development of material civilizations.”

“What is the meaning or value of living organisms in modern civilization? What is the meaning of living organisms to humans? They exist with us in the same environment, but they are always faced as food or decorative elements in a lower hierarchy,” Kim said.

Kim is using minuscule brushes to paint all of the details in these artworks and capture the beauty of animals.

Check out these unbelievable paintings in the photos below.

Object. that speaks to the disintegration of modern society in the face of the “advanced development of material civilizations.” By juxtaposing living and material things and displaying them as a piece of theater or advertising, Kim wishes to comment on society’s tendency to neglect living organisms. The painter’s fascination with the beauty of living creatures began when he was a child, as they forced him to stop and contemplate their place in the world. These creatures are now metaphors for life in Kim’s series and they are forced out of their natural setting into an object that cages them. “What is the meaning or value of living organisms in the modern civilization? What is the meaning of living organisms to humans? They exist with us in the same environment, but they are always faced as food or decorative elements in a lower hierarchy,” Kim writes. “Despite that they are living things with meaning and value of existence, the humans only use them for clear purposes when we have certain reasons. In the modern society, this structure is applied to the relationships between men, men and organization, or men and society. Humans, a living organism, is sometimes considered and used as a functional object.”
