Thanks to their eye-catching pink color, flamingos are one of the most fabulous creatures on Earth. But did you ever wonder how they got their recognizable color? Well, you can find out this and various other fun facts about flamingos if you continue reading.

Flamingos Get Their Pink Color from the Food They Eat

Flamingos don’t have naturally pink feathers. When born, baby flamingos are covered with grayish feathers. However, as they munch on brine shrimp and blue-green algae, which are rich in pigments known as carotenoids, their feathers turn pink.

There Are 6 Different Species of Flamingos

While all flamingos look similar, they are actually categorized into six different species. Four species – Chilean flamingo, Puna flamingo, Andean flamingo, and American flamingo – are found in America, including the Caribbean, while two species – Greater flamingo and Lesser flamingo – live in Europe and Asia.

Flamingos Stand on One Leg to Keep Themselves Warm

You probably noticed that flamingos often stand on one leg, but they don’t do it to show off their balance. Flamingos lose heat through their feet and legs, and this is problematic, considering they live in wetlands. By keeping one leg close to their bodies, they minimize the loss of heat and stay warm.

Flamingos Are Amazing Dancers

In order to attract a partner, a flamingo will perform an elaborate dance. As they grow older, their dance moves become more complex, and there are more than a hundred dance move combinations that flamingos are able to perform.

As the winter is closing in on Europe, many birds are migrating to warm parts of the planet in order to avoid the cold. This includes flamingos, which travel from countries like Albania, Montenegro, Italy, and Greece to Asian countries like Kazakhstan and Iran.

During their travels, these magnificent pink birds often take breaks at lakes in order to feed themselves and rest. And, as it turns out, their stops are among the most stunning things that nature has to offer.

Photographer Azmat Sarsenbayev recently managed to capture one of these stops on video and shared it on social media. The clip shows the flamboyance of flamingos (yes, this is really the expression used for a group of flamingos) flocking at Kazakhstan’s Lake Karakol and creating beautiful scenery that wowed internet users from all around the world.

It’s truly something amazing and it’s something you probably won’t get to see in your lifetime. To see what’s so special about it, check out the video below.

Bonaire Wild Bird Rehab, based in Bonaire, The Netherlands and founded by Elly Albers, rescues flamingos.

“The first thing I did when I came on this island was starting an animal shelter because there was no shelter,” Albers told The Dodo. “More and more flamingos are found starving and no one knows why but this woman spends every single day making sure no one goes hungry.”

Her day starts at 7 o’clock when it is time to give the flamingos their breakfast. Some of them are just there to eat, whilst others love to hang out all day at the Rehab. Together with the help of her volunteer team, Albers manages to properly take care of the birds.

“It’s also nice to see that there are many people in the world who love animals, who have passion and empathy. And do wanna put efforts in,” she added.

When the birds are ready, they are released on the coves where the breeding grounds are.

Follow the Rehab’s work on Instagram, and help support by donating on GoFundMe.

A recent video published by Oregon Zoo’s Youtube channel shows a group of baby flamingos running around looking adorable. The video shows the babies who haven’t even turned pink yet and the way they run is the most adorable thing we’ve seen all day. We’re sure the zoo guards are having so much fun watching over the birdies!

We were curious to learn why these babies flamingos aren’t pink yet, so we turned to Wikipedia that says, “Young flamingos hatch with greyish-red plumage, but adults range from light pink to bright red due to aqueous bacteria and beta-carotene obtained from their food supply.” Apparently, the stronger their feather color is, the healthier they are and the more desirable they are as mates. White or pale flamingos are usually unhealthy and lacking important nutrients.

Their color also depends on where they live; American flamingos are typically a brighter red color because they intake more beta carotene through the food that’s available to them.
