]]>Male penguins gift pebbles to female penguins in an attempt to impress them during mating season. And it isn’t just any pebble. They are known to spend hours searching the beach to find a perfect pebble.
It is well worth finding the perfect pebble, because when some penguin species get a mate, they have it for life. Even if they end up being away from each other for prolonged periods, they meet again on the breeding grounds. The mates identify each other by producing distinct sounds.
Penguin’s black and white feathers are quite stylish. However, there is much more to this “tuxedo” look than being elegant. It turns out that it also helps them camouflage. When they swim, the black color of their back is hard to spot from above. The white color on their bellies, on the other hand, matches the surface o the ocean and makes them less visible from underneath.
While they may seem slow, penguins are no strangers to walking long distances. In some cases, like reaching their breeding grounds, penguins can walk more than 60 miles in one direction.
There is a reason why penguins look shiny but not wet once they get out of the water; they are somewhat waterproof. Penguins have glands near their tail that produce waterproof oil, which they then use to cover their feathers. This helps them get warmer, be waterproof, and be able to swim faster.

]]>After a long, harsh winter huddled together for warmth, their worn and bulky winter feathers need to be replaced. This annual molting process sees penguins shed their old feathers and grow a fresh, waterproof coat in preparation for swimming and fishing during the bountiful summer months.
While penguins are clumsy waddlers on land, they transform into graceful gliders on their bellies. Spring brings the melting of snow and ice, creating perfect conditions for penguins to utilize their unique “belly flopping” technique.
Spring is prime time for penguin romance! Emperor penguins, known for their elaborate courtship rituals, use this time to attract mates. The males gather in large groups and bellow out loud, complex calls that sound like a combination of trumpeting and warbling. While not exactly singing, these calls are a vital part of penguin communication during the breeding season.

]]>YouTube channel The Southern Barlows recently shared an amazing video that shows two groups of Rockhopper penguins meeting at the Falkland Islands. The groups exchange brief greetings and continue on their way.
However, one penguin gets confused and almost walks away with a handful of strangers. Luckily for him, one of his friends notices this and returns to get him.
The two quickly rejoin their original group and happily hop away. As shown in the video below, the way they look out for one another is quite adorable.
Rockhopper penguins usually travel in groups, because the trips to the ocean and back to their colonies are safer in the company of others.
While they aren’t considered to have a tight “social circle”, rockhoppers can recognize their friends and partners among thousands of others in the colony thanks to visual and vocal cues. This is what most likely prompted one of the penguins to get his pal back!

Bubbles, Maggie, and Berkley are Humboldt species native to Chile and Peru’s deserts. They have their favorite pieces at the museums and the ones they loved less. “They seemed to react much better to Caravaggio than Monet,” says the museum’s executive director in the video.

]]>With temperatures dropping to around -75 degrees Fahrenheit (-60 Celsius), watching penguins stand on the ice with naked feet looks painful. Luckily, they have special circulation that allows them to do it without freezing. We imagine they’re not exactly warm, but it’s something.
Penguin feet have evolved to survive cold weather over time. Their legs don’t require much heat to keep working. Their feet restrict blood flow when it’s really cold and keep the temperature just above freezing point so they don’t lose body heat through them. With the ability to regulate where they store heat, penguins are able to keep their eggs warm so they can hatch.
A similar thing happens to humans, it’s just not as extreme. You’ve noticed how your hands and feet get cold in the winter weather; this is because the blood gets redirected to the core of your body, to your vital organs.

]]>The researchers discovered four other species there, but this latest one is “one of the largest penguin species ever found,” as confirmed by Paul Scofield, co-author of a new report in Alcheringa: An Australasian Journal of Palaeontology and senior curator at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch, as BBC writes.
The penguin is dubbed Crossvallia Waparensis and its height is estimated to be around five feet two inches and its weight is estimated to be around 154-176 pounds. As you can tell, this is considerably larger than any current penguin species and actually closer to human size. The scientists believe it managed to grow so big thanks to a lack of predators.
It’s assumed that the species lived for around 30 million years before the big sea mammals arrived on the scene. The study authors assume that it was the competition with marine mammals that ultimately led to this penguin species’ extinction.

]]>Feathers are obviously very important for these beautiful animals, as they keep them warm and dry in cold water. Over time, their feathers would wear and they need to be replaced. The process of molting isn’t simple and it usually lasts for weeks.
Molting begins when penguin’s body starts making new feathers. At that time, penguins would devour the food in order to increase their body weight and prepare themselves for the next stage. Once the animal loses its feathers, it won’t be able to return to the water and eat until new feathers grow. That can take two or three weeks, and during that time penguins would live on land, fasting and waiting for the process to end.
It easy to recognize a penguin getting ready to molt – it looks much bigger and its food intake usually doubles or triples during this time.

Each egg needs to be incubated for 65 days so the male penguins will do their best to keep them warm when the outside temperatures drop to nearly -40 degrees. They can go without food for so long that they are left with half their body weight when the females return in August.
From then, the females take the lead and males go into the ocean. The babies grow rapidly and are independent by December.
