Most people choose dogs and cats as pets, but one woman from California has a special spot for reptiles. Ada goes by Repti Fairy on social media, and she attracted thousands of followers on Instagram after opening up about her life with six reptile pets.

Ada is a Mexican artist based in California, who enjoys exploring the fantasy world of fairies, elves, and animals through her paintings. She also loves painting reptiles, which doesn’t come as a huge shocker since she shares a home with six of them right now.

Ada’s custom-made reptile enclosure currently houses six adorable pets—lizards Kovu, Rajah, Maxiums, and Oscar, plus the iguana MaryJane and a turtle named Turty. She recently decided to branch out and welcomed a tarantula named Scroop into her loving home.

Ada mostly focuses on funny and relatable content, because she doesn’t feel confident enough to give other people advice since she’s still learning how to take proper care of reptiles on a limited budget.

“Reptile supplies are not cheap so I’m taking it a few things at a time until I have everything. And it’s not that I don’t do my research, it’s mostly about the expenses but luckily I got a raise not too long ago so I have been able to spend more on upgrades,” she wrote on Instagram.

Chas from through the lleaves is a content creator, plant and animal lover, and mom of Fig, a baby leopard tortoise. The palm-size reptile has a wonderful life filled with daily spas, flower hats, and yummy snacks.

Fig’s mornings begin by greeting his mom with a big yawn, and then he is ready to start the day. First, he gets a morning mist for hydration. Then, his mom changes his water, and while he freshens up, she begins to prep his daily salad.

“Leopard tortoise are gazers in the wild so leafy greens, grasses, flowers, and succulents are their fav,” Chas shared with her Instagram community.

After having breakfast, he gets a daily spa to rehydrate and hangs out with his mom while she works. Fig loves his feline siblings and gets along with them very well. He even likes to cuddle with his best friend, Gouda.

He also likes playing dress up. Fig wears edible flower hats and other cute fashionable pieces like a cowboy or Santa hat.

When McKenna brought Pretzelcoatl home, he was so tiny that he could fit in her one hand, and although she was always into reptiles, she never had a snake pet before. The cute little ball python was named after the Mayan feather serpent god Quetzalcoatl.

“I realized that I could make it a little bit sillier by just turning it into Pretzelcoatl. Because he’s a snake and…doing pretzel things,” McKenna said in an interview with The Dodo and added that he loves dark places where he can slide around. So she decided to make him crochet caves.

“I think I’ve made like four or five different crochet caves as he’s gotten bigger,” she continued. “He climbs into my sleeves a lot. When I’m hanging out with him in my bed, he will just go straight under the blankets.”

Pretzel also loves cuddling and watching TV with his mom. “I’ve had moments where I’ve been really down, and I know that I can come home and have a friend there that will just hang out with me regardless of how I’m feeling. He is my favorite pet that I’ve ever had, even though he’s just…a noodle!”

According to a legend, St. Patrick used the power of his faith to drive all the snakes from Ireland into the sea. Though it sounds impressive, it’s not exactly what happened.

In fact, Ireland has never really had snakes, and it’s not the only country in the world without the legless reptiles. The same goes for New Zealand, Hawaii, Greenland, and Iceland, and the reason is simple: they are all islands.

Ireland was once part of a larger landmass. Around 10,000 years ago when the Ice Age ended, the glaciers started to melt, which resulted in Ireland separating from the land and becoming an island. Snakes did not make it to the island and they didn’t get a chance to make it across later.

The tongue of this Asp Viper has some interesting features. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ A forked tongue is a tongue split into two distinct tines at the tip. Snakes have a complex receptor system built into their tongue. Snakes “smell” (sense chemicals) using the tip of their tongue, and a forked tongue allows them to sense from which direction a smell is coming. The tongue is flicked out of the mouth regularly to sample the chemical environment. This increased ability to sense chemicals has allowed for heightened abilities to identify prey, recognize kin, choose mates, locate shelters, follow trails, and more. When a snake follows the trail of its prey the difference in chemicals on their left and right tip can guide them in the right direction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ © 2019 Ronald Zimmerman. Snakes and lizards both belong to the Squamata order. So why do lizards have fully formed legs while snakes are forced to move without them? Well, for one thing, some snakes can still develop legs and feet thanks to genetic coding they carry.

Most of them, however, have mutated over 100 million years ago and lost the ability to sprout limbs. Despite still carrying the coding in their bodies, it’s basically “switched off” so they don’t have any today.

The researchers from the University of Florida found that a gene called Sonic Hedgehog is responsible for limb development (yes, it was named by the video game character. They confirmed that there were once snakes with limbs but they have lost them over time.
