The Life of Sharks is the masterpiece of two creative people and shark lovers, writer Christian Talbot and illustrator Sophie Hodge. The webcomic that has attracted more than 20,000 Instagram followers features real facts about sharks mixed with humor.

In an interview for Southern Fried Science, the duo explained why they have chosen sharks as their main characters.

“Sharks just seemed like the funniest animal to try and give human emotions to and put into relationships because they’re seen as being cold, solitary, killing machines. Plus, sharks are just cool. Also, sharks can’t claim royalties,” they revealed and added that it started when Talbot began publishing little dialogues between sharks on his Facebook page.

“We’re quite popular with some of my comedian friends and they encouraged me to have them done as a cartoon. I can’t draw so I was delighted when I found out that not only could Sophie draw them, but she also was able to add her unique style to the whole thing. They’re funnier because of the way she draws them.”

Over time, some animals like black widows, sharks, and stingrays developed a notorious reputation of being dangerous and deadly for humans. However, the truth is that most of these species are peaceful unless provoked or attacked and contribute to a surprisingly low number of human fatalities.

In an attempt to address some of these common misconceptions, we decided to compile a list of 10 animals that are a lot less dangerous than you think. So, let’s get started.

Vampire Bat

Vampire bats are believed to be dangerous for humans because they feed by sucking blood and are known to carry rabies. However, they rarely consider humans as a food source and usually attack cattle and similar animals. Also, less than one percent of vampire bats actually has rabies.

Alligators

People often mistake alligators and crocodiles due to their similar appearance, but actually, these two reptiles are a lot different in terms of behavior. Crocodiles are not picky about their pray and are more likely to attack humans.

Alligators, on the other hand, are timid towards humans and don’t see them as a pray, as they hunt smaller animals. Upon an encounter with a human, they usually tend to run away.

Black Widows

Black widows are believed to be one of the most poisonous animals in existence, but they are in fact not a real threat for humans. Even when provoked, this spider is unlikely to bite. Also, in case a person gets bitten by a black widow, the bites can be easily treated and are not fatal.

Stingrays

Ever since zookeeper and TV personality Steve Irwin died after a stingray attack, these sea creatures are believed to be extremely dangerous for humans. The truth is, however, that stingrays are not aggressive at all and that they will choose to run away if they feel threatened.  They usually account for one or two deaths per year, with most of them being accidents.

Sharks

Movies like Jaws and Deep Blue Sea contributed to the fact that humans perceive sharks as lethal creatures that often attack swimmers. This, however, isn’t the case, as only 12 out of 500 shark species are a threat to humans. Also, shark attacks are responsible for six deaths on average every year, which means that you are a lot more likely to die from a cow attack.

Coral Snakes

Coral snakes are considered to be among the most poisonous snakes in the world, so they must be quite dangerous, right? Well, surprisingly, they are not. These snakes spend most of their time buried beneath the ground and come out on the surface only when it’s time to mate.

Their poison, while deadly, takes several hours to take full effect. Also, official records say that the last coral snakes-related death in the United States happened back in the 1960s.

Sharks are powerful and scary creatures that lurk in the dark cold seas and most people are terrified of them. The fact is, sharks are not that dangerous and once you get to know them, you’ll learn to appreciate them too. Here are some surprising facts about these sea monsters that will make you realize how amazing they actually are.

They’ve Been Around For a Long Time

Based on some fossils found in Australia and the United States, scientists believe that first sharks appeared around 455 million years ago. This means they’re actually older than dinosaurs! Amazing, right?

Sharks Don’t Have Bones

It’s surprising that these powerful animals actually don’t have bones. Instead, they have cartilage that makes up their skeleton.

Sharkskin Feels Similar to Sandpaper

You probably imagined that shark skin is similar to fish. But, no! Sharkskin is made up of tiny teeth-like structures called placoid scales which is why it feels similar to sandpaper.

Not So Dangerous

Statistics say that for every person killed by a shark, 25 million sharks are killed by people on an annual basis. These scary, large sea creatures are not so dangerous, after all. Most sharks are actually harmless, and they won’t attack a human being on purpose.

“Garbage Cans” of the Sea

Did you know that tiger sharks are also known as the “garbage cans” of the sea? Why, you ask? Many odd objects have been found inside of their stomachs, including tires, gasoline tanks, and license plates.

Australian photographer Sean Scott captured an amazing shot of two sharks within a crystal-clear wave while shooting in Red Bluff in Western Australia.

This is a remote location off the shore of the Indian Ocean, great for taking photographs because of the captivating nature. Scott was lucky to have been there in a perfect moment.

Once he arrived in Red Bluff, the photographer spotted a giant black spot near the shore – it was a large school of fish. He immediately started following and taking pictures with his drone, when he realized that the fish had attracted around 200 sharks. He quickly prepared the equipment and started shooting this interesting “dinner party”. That’s how the incredible image of two giant sharks in a wave was made.

“The shore break was quite large so the first wave came and I fired off a test shot to get my exposure and focus right. The very next wave rose up right on the shore, and sure enough, there were 2 big sharks in excess of 2 meters in the wave. I snapped away and ended up with 3 of my favorite shots. I stayed and waited for a further 2 hours and did not see them in that close again.”
