Snakes have long fascinated and terrified humans. While many snakes are harmless, there are a few species whose bite can mean serious trouble. Let’s shed some skin on the topic and explore three of the most dangerous snake species in the world.

Inland Taipan

Native to Australia, this snake is sometimes dubbed the “fierce snake,” though its temperament is anything but. The Inland Taipan is shy and reclusive. However, don’t let its introverted nature fool you. Its venom is powerfully neurotoxic, more so than any other snake on earth.

Saw-Scaled Viper

While it may not win in a contest of venom potency, the Saw-Scaled Viper earns its spot on this list through a combination of its aggressive nature and the frequency of fatal encounters. What makes the Saw-Scaled Viper particularly dangerous is its habitat’s overlap with populated areas, leading to frequent human encounters.

Black Mamba

No list of dangerous snakes would be complete without mentioning the Black Mamba. Residing in the savannas and rocky hills of southern and eastern Africa, the Black Mamba is not only one of the fastest snakes in the world but also among the most feared. The Black Mamba is highly aggressive when cornered and can deliver multiple bites in a single attack.

Snakes—you either love them or hate them. While they’re not as popular as dogs or cats, many people have snakes as pets. They happen to be much easier to care for than most pets, as long as you know how to care for them. If you’re thinking of getting a snake, here’s what you should know before bringing one home.

They Need Certain Temperatures and Humidity Levels

Snakes’ body temperatures adjust to their environmental temperatures and they need a hot, basking zone in their tanks to regulate their body temperatures. They’ll need a cooler zone in the ’70s and a basking zone in the ’90s. They also need ultraviolet light to help them get vitamin D and absorb calcium from their food. If the environment isn’t humid enough, they won’t shed their skin.

Snakes Can Grow Long

While young snakes may start off small, they can grow several feet long and several inches in width. Some large species even way over 100 pounds when fully grown. Snakes need a large tank so they can fully stretch out. Before you buy a snake, research the species so you have an idea of how big it will get.

Snakes Eat Rodents

Be prepared to feed your snake dead, frozen rodents or freshly killed ones. Keep in mind that some snakes are picky and they may only eat one type of meat.

When McKenna brought Pretzelcoatl home, he was so tiny that he could fit in her one hand, and although she was always into reptiles, she never had a snake pet before. The cute little ball python was named after the Mayan feather serpent god Quetzalcoatl.

“I realized that I could make it a little bit sillier by just turning it into Pretzelcoatl. Because he’s a snake and…doing pretzel things,” McKenna said in an interview with The Dodo and added that he loves dark places where he can slide around. So she decided to make him crochet caves.

“I think I’ve made like four or five different crochet caves as he’s gotten bigger,” she continued. “He climbs into my sleeves a lot. When I’m hanging out with him in my bed, he will just go straight under the blankets.”

Pretzel also loves cuddling and watching TV with his mom. “I’ve had moments where I’ve been really down, and I know that I can come home and have a friend there that will just hang out with me regardless of how I’m feeling. He is my favorite pet that I’ve ever had, even though he’s just…a noodle!”

According to a legend, St. Patrick used the power of his faith to drive all the snakes from Ireland into the sea. Though it sounds impressive, it’s not exactly what happened.

In fact, Ireland has never really had snakes, and it’s not the only country in the world without the legless reptiles. The same goes for New Zealand, Hawaii, Greenland, and Iceland, and the reason is simple: they are all islands.

Ireland was once part of a larger landmass. Around 10,000 years ago when the Ice Age ended, the glaciers started to melt, which resulted in Ireland separating from the land and becoming an island. Snakes did not make it to the island and they didn’t get a chance to make it across later.

The same Asp Viper (Vipera aspis) as last week, but with a different composition. On this photo the forked tongue is visible. The tongue of this Asp Viper has some interesting features. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ A forked tongue is a tongue split into two distinct tines at the tip. Snakes have a complex receptor system built into their tongue. Snakes “smell” (sense chemicals) using the tip of their tongue, and a forked tongue allows them to sense from which direction a smell is coming. The tongue is flicked out of the mouth regularly to sample the chemical environment. This increased ability to sense chemicals has allowed for heightened abilities to identify prey, recognize kin, choose mates, locate shelters, follow trails, and more. When a snake follows the trail of its prey the difference in chemicals on their left and right tip can guide them in the right direction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ © 2019 Ronald Zimmerman. Finding any viper species is always a special moment. The vertical pupils, keeled scales and striking poses are just breathtaking. Vipers always earn some extra respect with their elegancy and being a venomous snake. All of this came together in this special moment with a male Viper (Vipera aspis). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ A healthy adult person can overcome an Asp viper bite without too many complications. Certain kind of people such as children and elderly or unhealthy persons may suffer serious complications which could be fatal. Seeing a huge snake trying to cross the road would be alarming in most parts of the world, but in Brazil, it isn’t such a big deal according to the latest viral video captured near city of Porto Velho.

The video shows a huge anaconda trying to cross the road and getting a badly needed help from humans. Seeing that this magnificent snake could get killed before making it across safely, group of people decided to get out of their cars and stop the traffic on both sides of the road.

Then they waited for the snake to safely get on the other side before resuming their trip. You can check out the entire thing in the video below.

“We decided to stop the car and get out,” – Italo Nascimento Fernandes told The Dodo. “There are no signs for the cars to wait so she can cross. I have seen snakes run over on the highway before, and think such thing is a crime.”

“It’s not everyone who protects animals like that. Some people prefer to see them dead,” – he added. “Seeing all the people help gave a wonderful sensation.”

This unselfish action was also met with praise by biologist Flavio Terassini who estimated that the snake was 10 years old and that it would be probably dead if these animal lovers didn’t step forward.

“People did a good job of stopping traffic in order to stop it from being run over,” – Terassini told G1 Globo.

Snakes and lizards both belong to the Squamata order. So why do lizards have fully formed legs while snakes are forced to move without them? Well, for one thing, some snakes can still develop legs and feet thanks to genetic coding they carry.

Most of them, however, have mutated over 100 million years ago and lost the ability to sprout limbs. Despite still carrying the coding in their bodies, it’s basically “switched off” so they don’t have any today.

The researchers from the University of Florida found that a gene called Sonic Hedgehog is responsible for limb development (yes, it was named by the video game character. They confirmed that there were once snakes with limbs but they have lost them over time.

If you thought that cobra was the deadliest snake in the world, here comes a new viper that will send chills down your spine. Scientists have discovered a new species of snake that is capable of striking without opening its mouth.

The venomous creature was found hidden in the evergreen forests of Guinea and Liberia and was later identified as a new species that belongs to the stiletto snakes. These vipers have long fangs sticking out of the corner of their mouths and this unique feature allows them to attack its pray sideways.

When the researchers found the snake for the first time in Liberian forest, they tried gripping it behind the head with their fingers.

“In this head position, the snake repeatedly tried to strike”, the authors wrote on their blog.

“Either it tried to move slowly away from the human observers or it abruptly coiled and uncoiled, often jumping distances equaling almost its entire body length, similar to wolf snakes of the genus Lycophidion.”

Luckily, no one was hurt. A stiletto snake’s bite would be necessarily life threatening, but it can cause severe pain, swelling, blistering and even major tissue damage. Dangerous for a harmless-looking snake, right?

In fact, Ireland has never really had snakes, and it’s not the only country in the world without the legless reptiles. The same goes for New Zealand, Hawaii, Greenland, and Iceland, and the reason is simple: they are all islands.
