Visiting wildlife can be an exciting adventure, but there’s a dark side of wildlife tourism that’s not always visible at first glance. There’s no doubt that we as tourists should be more responsible, and here’s what that means in practice.

According to Ben Pearson, Senior Campaign Manager for World Animal Protection, the Australian branch, “the important thing to keep in mind is that wild animals are not entertainers,” he told Lonely Planet. “If you want to see wildlife on holiday, the best thing you can do is to find somewhere to see it in the wild. The next best option is seeking out a legitimate sanctuary that offers observation only, so the animals are free to display their natural behaviours,” says Pearson.

You should always keep your distance when watching wildlife. Not only is this is a good measurement for not disturbing the animals, but it’s also a helpful safety tip for your own sake. Connecting with the wild animals is often not a good idea and the best way to see them in their natural habitat is by taking a walking or jeep safari tour.

Moose are beautiful animals that most travelers to Canada and Alaska want to see in person, but you should never forget that they are after all huge, hairy animals that can seriously hurt you if you’re not careful. Many believe that moose are too cute and friendly to be aggressive, but the fact is that there are more moose attacks in Alaska than the combined attacks by black bear and grizzly. Here’s how to stay safe around moose.

Avoid Them If You Can

It’s not unusual to see moose in Canada and Alaska, but once you’ve seen one, you’re generally better off avoiding encountering them. Keep in mind that moose can feel attacked if you get too close. If you still want to get a bit closer, make sure to stay loud all the time so you don’t surprise them with your sudden appearance.

Red Flags

There are signs that you should stay away. First of all, look at the moose’s ears. If they are pinned backward, it’s a sign that it’s agitated and that you should go away immediately. If the hair on the animal’s shoulders stands up, it’s also a sign it wants to be left alone.

A moose licking its lips will soon start to charge, and you should just go away. If a moose does charge, quickly find something solid to get behind before you run.

Around 75% of all mammals living in North America, Europe, and Australia disappeared when the ice age began 10,000-12,000 years ago. This made cheetahs nearly extinct, but a few of them survived and managed to continue the species to this day. In science, this is known as a population bottleneck. Cheetahs exist in a gene pool so small that the genetic variations among them can compare to those of deliberately inbred livestock.

This makes cheetahs virtual clones. There’s so much that can go wrong for these cats over time because of the lack of genetic diversity. It’s not easy for them to produce healthy offspring. Right now, the death rate of cheetahs in captivity in the U.S. and Canada exceeds the birth rate. The species has very high infant mortality rates — over 20% of infants born in captivity don’t live past six months, while the number for those born in the wild is around 70%, according to Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

Adult cheetahs are vulnerable to disease and the packs are prone to spreading various illnesses to each other.

Photo by Beverly Joubert @beverlyjoubert | Today is World Lion Day. The dominant male of the Tsaro pride at Duba Plains in the Okavango surveys the wide-open landscape from an unusual perch. Duba's lions are known for their swimming prowess—essential in their watery environment and a skill that has made them highly muscular and some of the biggest lions to be found. Recently, we've noticed that these innovative lions are increasingly using trees as a vantage point from which to plan a hunt. The lionesses have become rather good at it. This male did not manage to descend quite as comfortably as he climbed up. Unlike leopards, lions' ankle joints have not evolved to grip branches—and on the way down, he ended up in a highly undignified tumble. This arboreal experiment may not have worked out perfectly for him; however, seeing these lions constantly pushing their hunting strategies in this difficult ecosystem is promising for the future—one that is increasingly precarious in a changing climate and in shrinking habitat. It shows that lions can adapt and learn to use their environment to their advantage. But judging from the fact that there are more statues of lions left in the world than actual lions, we know that we have to do all that we can to help these big cats, no matter how innovative they are. Ten years ago, together with @dereckjoubert and @NatGeo, we set up the Big Cats Initiative as a long-term effort to halt their decline in the wild. To date, this has supported more than 120 innovative projects in 28 countries, all helping big cats and communities thrive. Shivani Bhalla, founder of an organization that promotes coexistence between humans and wildlife called Ewaso lions, moved to the Samburu region in Kenya in 2002, only to end up surprised about not seeing prides of lions. In fact, this is the only place in the world where you can see lions leading perfectly nice lives without a pride to back them up.

As she learned from the local people, there are around 50 lions living in the area but they don’t stick together. “Everyone keeps labeling lions as the only social cat, but they’re not really social here,” Bhalla tells National Geographic. Her research about the lions has been published in her Ph.D. dissertation.

Some of the reasons not to form prides include not having to share food, and there’s definitely no abundance of it in Samburu. Also, the lions living there would have a hard time maintaining a defined territory as everything is patched up among protected areas and community areas. Surprisingly, the arrangement these animals came up with is actually the best they could hope for.

The African wildcats look a lot like domestic cats. That’s not an accident, given that they are pretty closely related. Besides their physical appearance, the two species have many other things in common as well.

The African wildcats, as their name suggests, live in Africa, but they can also be found in India, China, and Mongolia. Their fur color depends on the area they live in, so they can blend into their surroundings while hunting. The typical length of a cat is around 1 foot 8 inches, with their tail is half that length.

Their favorite food includes mice and rats, but they will also eat small birds, rabbits, scorpions, and spiders. They are extremely territorial and will keep their space safe from intruders. Their life expectancy is around 16 years and they typically give birth to two to five kittens at a time.

There are also subspecies that formed from crossings between domestic cats and African wildcats and they are actually pretty common.

Did you know that there’s a species of snails that are as big as a human’s head? They are native to African countries Kenya and Tanzania, but they recently appeared in Florida as well.

The giant African land snail can grow over 8 inches in length. If you have trouble comprehending that, we totally understand you.

As the Florida Department of Agriculture announced, “This is not science fiction. This is real.” These snails feed on around 500 types of plants, so it’s fair to say they’d eat “almost anything,” as described by Daniel Benjamin, public information officer for the Florida Department of Agriculture’s Division of Plant Industry, and reported by The Dodo.

“When it was at its peak, we’d find marks on the sides of houses where the snails had been eating the stucco,” said Benjamin. “Stucco contains calcium, which the snails consume to keep their shells healthy.”

In some parts of the world, people keep them as pets. This is illegal in the U.S., though. The giant snails can live up to 10 years in the wild and around five or six years in captivity.

They Aren’t Hybrids

Tanuki isn’t a hybrid of raccoons and dogs. It belongs to the Canidae family, just like foxes and wolves.

They Aren’t Endangered

There are many tanukis living in the wild, though many people believe they are an endangered species.

They Can Be Dangerous

Tanukis are not domesticated, so they can be aggressive. Don’t get too close if you see one!

There’s One Place in the US Where You Can See Them

The only tanukis living in the U.S. Are Loki and Thor, who reside at the Zoo Atlanta.

They Are Feminists

Male tanukis support females by bringing them food during pregnancy and helping them raise the puppies.

The male giraffe has been losing its pigment slowly for the past few years. It all began with a few white patches but has spread to a large area of white coat that now covers one-third of his body.

It wasn’t obvious what’s happening at first, but further observation showed that the giraffe had a skin condition called vitiligo that causes the skin to lose pigment in patches. It hasn’t been recorded in giraffes before this one.

Clare Parkes is the artist behind these incredible and life-like portraits of animals. She paints both pets and wildlife and manages to show the animal’s character through art.

“I am a self-taught wildlife and pet portrait artist specializing in pastels,” Parkes writes on her profile at Artists and Illustrators. “I discovered my love of drawing whilst on maternity leave and it has become a huge passion of mine. I have spent the last ten years working as a wax figure painter at Madame Tussauds in London, but my dream is to pursue drawing full time.”

“I live in Buckinghamshire with my two-year-old son Oscar and having grown up surrounded by beautiful countryside I have always loved wildlife and the outdoors. I enjoy capturing the emotion and personality of each animal in my drawings.”

Tanuki is an animal that looks like a raccoon but it’s actually a dog. Tanukis are not as rare as you think, but they are indeed unusual. They can be found all over Europe, Russia, China, Estonia, Japan, and Scandinavia, but they don’t live in North America. Here are 5 facts about them.

The only tanukis living in the U.S. Are Loki and Thor, who reside at the Zoo Atlanta.

They Are Feminists

Male tanukis support females by bringing them food during pregnancy and helping them raise the puppies.

There’s a rare giraffe that’s losing its spots as time goes by. It belongs to the subspecies Rothschild’s giraffe and lives in a natural reserve in Kenya.
