]]>Goldfish are usually kept as pets, but some people may feel tempted to release them once they’re no longer able to take care of them. This may seem like the kindest thing to do, but it’s a huge no-no because goldfish are secretly an extremely invasive species that can cause harm to native fish when released in the wild.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) warned about the dangers of leaving a pet goldfish in the wild after a “megalodon” goldfish was found in a Presque Isle State Park waterway.
“This goldfish isn’t supposed to be here. But someone released it, thinking they were being kind. Instead, they created an invasive problem that can last decades. Goldfish grow massive in the wild, where they can turn lakes and waterways into murky messes, steal food from native fish, and wreck water quality,” reads USFWS’s Facebook post.
Instead of letting your goldfish loose if you can’t keep it, you should consider re-homing it, returning it to a pet store, or contacting local aquariums and rescue groups to check if they can take it in. Goldfish released in the wild grow and breed quickly, in addition to potentially spreading disease and disrupting water quality, making it harder for native populations to survive.

The zoo announced her birth on Christmas Eve, revealing a few zoo guests witnessed her miraculous birth, along with many keepers who were there to take care of Poppy and her mom.
More than 100,000 people from 165 countries placed votes choosing baby hippo’s name, and Poppy was picked as the winner with 52,8%, narrowly beating Hammie Mae. This name is as fitting as it gets since her mom Iris and sisters Violet and Petunia are also named after flowers.
The Metro Richmond Zoo is constantly sharing Poppy’s photos and videos on Instagram, and they’re hoping that her popularity will inspire people to learn more about her endangered species. The pygmy hippos are native to West Africa, and only 2,500 mature individuals can be found in the wild.

As it turns out, the feline is “obsessed” with harmonica and will “emerge” from anywhere in the house as soon as she hears its tunes.

As it turns out, summoning cats with wind instruments is more common than anyone would think. Responding to the post, one user explained that they had witnessed something similar in their own household.

]]>It’s no secret that an alarming number of deer die in traffic, and the British railway company Network Rail decided to do something about it. They joined forces with train operator LNER to install the deterrent system to keep deer off the busy rail routes in 2023, and the results are pretty promising.
The AI system in question is programmed to identify a deer approaching the tracks, forcing audible and visual alarms to be activated. The automated system is meant to deter the animals from crossing the rails, and it yielded pretty impressive results during the trial period, deterring around 6,000 deer.
Network Rail rolled out this AI system at Little Bytham and Stoke Junction, but they’re thinking of expanding the scheme given the positive results. Johanna Priestley, the route engineer for Network Rail’s east coast route, told BBC that this measure would help “keep passengers and train crew safe, as well as protecting deer from the railway.”

She described her as “very badly behaved” and said that she decided to return her after she ate three passports because it was “an absolute logistical nightmare” to replace them.
After her statement attracted criticism, Allen took to social media to explain that her family loved Mary very much after adopting her from the NY shelter Animal Haven, but a severe case of separation anxiety she developed made it difficult to take proper care of her.
“The person that she was re-homed with was known to us and that rehoming happened within 24 hours of her being returned. We couldn’t meet Mary’s needs and her happiness and welfare were central to us making that decision, as difficult as it was,” she wrote on X, formally known as Twitter.
Allen’s story sparked a conversation about the harmful stigma around rehoming pets, and many people have come to the singer’s defense. Tiffany A. Lacey, executive director at Animal Haven, was one of them and she said they found a loving home for Mary, adding it’s their policy to take animals back if the adoption doesn’t work out.

But even from that height, giraffes are great at spotting the world below them.
“I’ve done a few giraffe walkovers, but this one I think is really cool, if you stick it out to the end, there’s a surprise close-up for you, It always amazes me how they spot the smallest things, even when it’s on the ground like my phone here,” Brian wrote in caption while sharing a number of other interesting facts about giraffes.
