]]>Flamingos don’t have naturally pink feathers. When born, baby flamingos are covered with grayish feathers. However, as they munch on brine shrimp and blue-green algae, which are rich in pigments known as carotenoids, their feathers turn pink.
While all flamingos look similar, they are actually categorized into six different species. Four species – Chilean flamingo, Puna flamingo, Andean flamingo, and American flamingo – are found in America, including the Caribbean, while two species – Greater flamingo and Lesser flamingo – live in Europe and Asia.
You probably noticed that flamingos often stand on one leg, but they don’t do it to show off their balance. Flamingos lose heat through their feet and legs, and this is problematic, considering they live in wetlands. By keeping one leg close to their bodies, they minimize the loss of heat and stay warm.
In order to attract a partner, a flamingo will perform an elaborate dance. As they grow older, their dance moves become more complex, and there are more than a hundred dance move combinations that flamingos are able to perform.

‘Sweating like a pig’ is another big fat lie about pigs. With very few sweat glands, they opt for alternative cooling methods, beating the heat with mud baths and refreshing dips.
Here’s a heartwarming tidbit: while nursing, mother pigs sing to their beloved piglets. The little ones learn to recognize Mom’s voice and run towards her sweet tunes. How cute is that?

]]>Now, most of us are so concentrated on enjoying their beauty that we rarely try to find out more about them. So, let’s fix that and check out these fun facts that you probably didn’t know about swans.
While we usually use the term “swan” for both males and females, they have their own distinctive terms. A female swan is called a pen while a male swan is referred to as cob.
Swans are not native to North America, and they were introduced to the continent from Europe. Also, there are no swans in the wild in Africa.
Swans are usually found calmly strolling up and down the lakes, but they are incredibly fast when it comes to flying. Adult swan can reach a flying speed of 60 miles per hour.
While it may be hard to believe these beautiful birds can be frightening, there are some people who are genuinely afraid of swans. The fear of swans is known as kiknophobia or cygnophobia.
Swans have both beauty and brains. Studies showed that they can remember behavioral patterns and faces and know who was good to them and who wasn’t.
There were many different species of swans in the past, but unfortunately, most of them are now extinct. Currently, there are six species around: Mute swan, Black swan, Black-necked swan, Whooper swan, Tundra swan, and Trumpeter swan.
Swans are known to be very fateful. They find a mate at the age of two and usually spend the rest of their life with them.
Unlike most birds, swans can have a long life, and some specimens have lived more than 20 years.

]]>“It’s impossible to know what a non-human animal truly experiences,” he told How Stuff Works in an email interview.
It’s easy for us to tell when we’re thirsty. We first experience dry mouth, which can lead to fatigue and lightheadedness, and if we don’t drink water for a very long time, we can start craving it and become unable to think about anything else. But we can’t know if fish experience thirst. “I think of thirst as a cognitive response to hydration and it’s hard to get inside a fish’s brain,” Boston College assistant biology professor Christopher Kenaley told the outlet. One thing is sure — without hydration, fish would die. They use a process called osmoregulation to regulate water balance.
The process is not the same for saltwater and freshwater fish, but their bodies are perfectly capable to maintain a healthy relation of blood and salt at all times.

Scientists do not agree whether birds migrate instinctively or due to some specific environmental cues. It depends on birds, too. Some of them will delay migration as long as they can find something to eat.

]]>First of all, is this a real deal. We were skeptical at first, but the research proved it right. “You will notice, if the horse is not clipped, that it will most likely have a mustache that curls up along the horse’s lips and an abundance of jaw hair, often referred to as a beard, will also be much longer than that of other breeds. Some may be so long that the beard hair comes down to the horse’s bottom lip,” we read on the Old Mill Farm website.
Below are several photos from Twitter and Facebook. One user wrote, “I had no idea this was a real thing.” Neither did we.

Why don’t they just migrate like many other kinds of birds? Turns out, birds that don’t migrate have evolved to overcome the harsh weather. During the winter days, they are mostly on the run for food, and it’s nighttime when they need a shelter to hide in.

Whatever the reason is, we have different names for different animal groups, and these are some of the strangest ones.
