]]>Thread Handed Jill is a talented embroidery artist based in California, and we’ve watched her explore many different subjects through her art. Her embroidery is mostly inspired by nature, and she’s stitched together everything from flowers to cats, before deciding to settle on spider webs.
Alejandra started working on her signature spider web design because they have the power to give your home a subtly spooky vibe, in addition to offering an alternative to preserved spiderwebs. She uses many different techniques to bring her creations to life but usually sticks to hand-stitching spider webs with silver metallic thread and tiny crystal beads.
Alejandra isn’t gatekeeping her skills, and if you want to make a spider web embroidery of your own, she’s happy to help you out. She shared a PDF pattern with five spider web templates on her Etsy page, making sure to cover all the basics and make them as beginner-friendly as possible.

]]>Ross captured the encounter on camera and shared it on social media, with his video going instantly viral and receiving more than 43 million views in less than a week. The clip shows Ross holding a flashlight while the light hits the canvas of the tent and reveals a scary shadow of a huge spider.
Other TikTok users rushed to the comments section to show just how astonished they were by the video.
“There is absolutely NO reason why spiders need to be this big, like none,” one user wrote.
“And im out here crying over a tiny spider,” another added.
As it turned out, Ross wasn’t scared by the spider at all. In a chat with The Dodo, Ross said that he knew that the spider didn’t mean any harm. Instead of panicking, he calmly walked outside, and relocated the spider to a safe place using a stick.
“I wasn’t afraid. On the contrary, I like contact with nature,” Ross shared.

]]>There are around 50,000 spider species in the world and all of them have the ability to produce silk. Some spiders even produce different types of silk, using each type for a different action, like wrapping up their prey, building a nest, or creating a web.
Spiders might have a scary appearance, but they rarely pose any danger to humans. Only a few species, like the brown recluse and black widow, have venom powerful enough to do any damage, and even they will only use it when provoked.
You might think that the spider on the wall is checking you out, but that most likely isn’t the case. Despite having up to eight eyes, spiders actually have pretty bad eyesight. The only exception is some members of the jumping spider family, which can perceive more colors than humans can.
When looking to engage in mating rituals, spiders can get quite romantic. Some of them do adorable dances, like Maratus volans, aka peacock spider, while others give their mates silk-wrapped gifts.

]]>The Phidippus Jumping Spiders have big, googly eyes and long eyelashes which makes them look very cute. Their owner used to be afraid of pretty much all spiders. However, the Jumping Spiders were the ones that really got him into them.
“For me, it was just the intelligence they have,” their owner shared on The Dodo. “They have impeccable eyesight but they also have complex problem-solving skills. Just like humans, they all have their different quirks. You know, they all have their own personality. And I think that’s the main thing that I want people to take away from it, is that they don’t want to harm us and they’re very sweet and just because they’re small creatures doesn’t mean they don’t deserve our respect and our love.”

]]>Not all spider silks are equal, and this is mostly influenced by the chemical composition of the silk. One of the most widespread spired families, the orb-weavers, lives across the world and includes over 3,500 species. Each individual orb-weaver can generate eight or nine types of silks, depending on what they need them for. For example, the softest silk is used for protecting the eggs while the other varieties are much firmer.
As recently discovered, each strand of spider silk is made up of thousands of parallel nanostrands of nanofibrils. “Each of these thin nanostrands is made up of protein and measures less than a millionth of an inch in diameter – hundreds of thousands of times thinner than the width of a human hair, say the scientists from the College of William and Mary in Virginia,” writes the website Silence Alert.
So, the next time you see a spider’s web, know that you’re witnessing one of the most amazing wonders of life.

]]>No matter how much you hate the idea, you will often see a spider and its web somewhere in your house. When you do, don’t kill it. Spiders can actually help you fight other insects that are not nearly as friendly.
How awesome is the idea of having a live “pet” at home that eats mosquitos and other annoying pests? Be gentle to your unwanted guests and they’ll return the favor.
