Derrick Downey Jr. is now a successful influencer and a children’s book author, but things weren’t always going his way. This Los Angeles man describes himself as “a squirrel’s best friend” after these curious creatures changed his life and helped him overcome his darkest days.

With one million followers under his belt, Downey now has a lot to look forward to, but he was in a dark place just a few years ago. His life took a wild turn when a squirrel suddenly appeared on his balcony, and he had no idea this was just the start of a beautiful friendship.

After offering some treats to the first squirrel, they just started showing up on his balcony. He quickly befriended an adorable pair Richard and Maxine, and they helped him feel good about the world again.

“Going outside and connecting with nature was my gateway to relief from depression. It brought me peace. I would see Richard walking around, and talking to him made me feel good about the world,” he told the Washington Post.

Downey later decided to take his friendship with Richard and Maxine to the next level and built them an amazing squirrel home, that has everything from a makeshift fireplace to a tiny TV. He also chronicled his adventures with Maxine in his first children’s book, Hand and Paw: Maxine’s Tale of Compassion.

Albino squirrels are fairly rare and managing to spot one in the wild is always a fascinating sight. But one homeowner recently had the luck of having one of these squirrels come at their front door.

In a video shared by Ring, a company that manufactures security cameras and home protection systems, an albino squirrel can be seen triggering a front-door camera of one of their clients.

The squirrel is carrying a nut and obviously has intentions to stash it in the twig sculpture at the entrance. However, after realizing there is no opening in the sculpture, the animal decides to rest on top of it and think through its next move.

Internet users were amazed by the sight, and some of them realized for the first time that albino squirrels exist.

“It is adorable, have never seen one and didn’t even there was any,” one commenter wrote.

While Asia is home to two different species of white squirrel, they don’t exist in the wild in North America. The squirrel captured by the Ring camera is likely an eastern grey squirrel with a case of albinism. One of the consequences of this condition is a lack of melanin production, which results in white fur and pinkish or red eyes.

Squirrels can be surprisingly loyal to humans, especially if you are nice to them. One woman from British Columbia, Canada, has recently witnessed this first-hand from an adorable black squirrel named Samuel.

Reddit user Chrissy Joan (@cowskeeper) recently shared an amusing video that shows her playing with a squirrel. The tiny animal jumps all over Joan and seems to be having the time of its life.

“We helped this squirrel when he was a baby, and he comes back to us everyday to play,” wrote Joan in the caption.

The post quickly attracted the attention of other Reddit users, who were impressed by the bond between Joan and Samuel. Many of them wanted to know more, and luckily, Joan delivered. She uploaded several more videos of Samuel while sharing his backstory.

According to Joan, who owns a small farm nearby Vancouver, her family found Samuel when he was a baby. He was in need of help at the time, so Joan contacted one wildlife rescue organization to ask for advice. With the help of professionals, she nursed Samuel back to health and released him to the wild when he got better.

But it turned out that Samuel didn’t want to move away. So the squirrel made a home for himself on a nearby tree and is now visiting every day to get some love from Joan.

Western North America is currently dealing with an extreme heat wave that resulted in record temperatures in several cities. This includes Portland, which broke its highest temperature record three times in June alone.

These extreme conditions have been especially tough on the wildlife, which has limited means to deal with this heat. Luckily, animal lovers are doing their best to help them cool down, even for a bit.

One of them is Joe Rojas-Burke, a Portland-based science writer and former cell biology researcher, who recently decided to offer some refreshment to the local squirrels by leaving ice cubes on his porch. It didn’t take long for one thirsty squirrel to take the offer, and luckily for us, Rojas-Burke managed to capture this on camera.

The video, which since became viral on social media, shows a squirrel munching on an ice cube in an adorable way. She then realizes she’s being recorded, glancing at the camera several times, but can’t resist the ice and continues to lick it.

This isn’t the only way Rojas-Burke helps the animals in need during the hot days. He also regularly refills the birdbath in his yard so the birds and bees could stay hydrated.

Mark Rober is a former NASA engineer who has a popular YouTube channel on which he posts videos about all sorts of fun scientific projects. The most recent one saw him put his talents and skills against a group of bird food-stealing squirrels.

A while ago, Rober decided to try birdwatching and installed a bird feeder in his backyards. All went great until squirrels discovered this easy source of food and started raiding it. He tested several other feeders with protection against these little nut-loving animals, but they managed to crack them all.

Seeing that squirrels can outsmart every bird feeder on the market, Rober came up with the idea to test their capability in a different kind of way. He built a Ninja Warrior-styled obstacle course to see whether they can rise to this challenge.

Rober installed eight obstacles, ranging from ladder bridges and mazes to pitchfork tumblers and jumping platforms. At the end of the course, he placed a “prize,” which consisted of a box full of walnuts.

At first, the squirrels managed to advance only two or three obstacles before giving up. But, they continued to return each day, adapting their strategy and becoming more successful.

Watch the video below to find out whether squirrels managed to get to the end of the course, or NASA ingenuity got the best of them.

Sweet Pea is an adorable little squirrel that has a unique look and personality. She isn’t an ordinary squirrel, she was made a bit different than most of her brothers and sisters. Her tail doesn’t grow fur, so she can’t live in the wild with all the other squirrels. Instead, she is living her best life with her human mom.

Miki Farmer has raised Sweet Pea from her earliest days since she was a little baby and their bond is so strong that they have to go everywhere together. The mom explained in an interview for The Dodo that she can’t stand the idea of having Sweet Pea sitting in a cage all day.

“I try to take her with me everywhere that I go. She loves to just prop up on my arm. I always wear something that I know she can tuck into and be close. She has become just the greatest little addition to my life. As long as I have her with me, that’s more opportunity for her to be out and about,” Farmer said.

Keep up with their adventures on Instagram and give them some love.

As time went by, the pair slowly prepared Hammy to release her back to the wild. When the time came, the squirrel stayed gone for three days, but after that, she came back home, and never went back.

“She’s just so happy all the time and just constantly has these little bursts of energy where she hops around and just does these backflips that just make you laugh,” her mom told The Dodo and added that one of Hammy’s favorite thing is to hide nuts all around the house.

“In vases…is her favorite. Underneath rugs and in our hoodies, she likes to bury stuff there,” she revealed.

Hammy now has an Instagram account where she has attracted more than 18,000 followers. If you want to see her adorable face, check out the gallery below.

Peanut was a baby when he chose his human mom and dad. The couple was going out for ice cream when they heard little feet.

“This little squirrel’s running at us with no fear. So I thought, ’He’ll go back home if we keep walking and find his mom.’ We tried to walk away. He just wasn’t taking ’no’ for an answer,” Lizzy Kimball told The Dodo.

They nursed him to health and they kept trying to teach him how to be a squirrel. However, when they tried to release him, it didn’t go as planned. After the third time, they have realized that Peanut was different.

“I didn’t know these little animals had this capacity for love. He’ll run right up my arm sometimes and boop me on the nose and run away,” Brian Graves shared The Dodo and added that Peanut has taught them so much.

“Sometimes I’ll just hold my hand up, and we hold hans while watching the sunset. I don’t know the last time I watched the sunset. You get busy. You stop looking at stuff. It’s a great reminder of paying attention to the world around you.”

The family now saves other squirrels too.

Last October, over 300 volunteers gathered to count every single squirrel in the famous NYC park. As it has been revealed by the project leader, Central Park Squirrel Census, it’s estimated there are 2,373 squirrels in the park.

“I was trying to make an educated guess,” National Geographic quotes census logistics chief Sally Parham. “I got a number that was huge and I intuitively halved it. And the difference between the real number and my guess was 212, New York City’s area code.

People are divided about whether or not it is okay to feed the squirrels. The debate revolves around the safety of the human food for the bushy-tailed cuties and for the nature they live in.

There are many reasons why many people, including some experts, don’t recommend this. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, human food isn’t meant for wild animals. “Wild animals have specialized diets, and they can become malnourished or die if fed the wrong foods. Also, animals cannot distinguish food from wrappers or foil and can get sick eating these items,” reads the USDA site.

What do you think? Do you ever feed the squirrels?

It’s not news that there are many squirrels living in NYC’s Central Park, but how many of them are there?
