The post Fun Facts About Orcas You Probably Didn’t Know appeared first on Our Funny Little Site.
]]>Most of us think that dolphins are cute and unthreatening. Well, you’ll be surprised to know that orcas and dolphins are actually members of the same Delphinidae family. Orcas are the largest members of the family, so you wouldn’t be wrong if you called them dolphins as well.
Orcas might not be the biggest creatures in the seas, but that isn’t stopping them from being apex predators, meaning they don’t have a natural predator of their own. They are known to hunt and overpower whales that are twice their size.
Orcas are fast swimmers who can cover up to 160 miles per day and don’t get tired easily. As a matter of fact, they have been observed to cover a distance of 6,000 miles as part of a continuous trip.
Orcas live in groups called pods, which form a larger social group known as clan, which inhabits a certain region. The interesting thing about these clans is that each of them “speaks” a different language and has separate calls. Still, this doesn’t prevent pods from different clans from socializing with each other.

]]>Sea Rescue Ireland shared the story of a sea pup’s rescue on Facebook. According to their post, the sea pup, later named Tralee, was found lethargic, injured, and underweight. During the initial exam, a number of wounds were discovered on her flippers, and she was also infected with parasites.
After her wounds were cleaned, Tralee received antibiotics and pain relief medicines before starting deworming treatment. As the days went by, the sea pup started looking better and stronger while displaying her charming personality.
“She has responded well to treatment, and now that we see her personality shining through, it’s no surprise she draws a crowd. She certainly has star quality and leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes,” Seal Rescue Ireland wrote in the post.
While her health improved greatly, Tralee will remain in the wildlife center for the time being. After experts determine she is fully ready to return to the wild, she will be released to her natural habitat.

]]>The best way to avoid jellyfish altogether is to be in the right place at the right time. Avoid swimming and diving in areas known to have many jellyfish, especially during peak season. You can even check a jellyfish forecast to avoid potential encounters that could turn dangerous.
Even if you get informed about it before heading to the beach, it’s a good idea to stay alert when in areas with occasional jellyfish sightings. Keep an eye out for jellyfish in the water and on the shoreline, and don’t try to touch them or go anywhere near them to avoid the sting. It’s also a good idea to wear a protective suit and footwear while swimming.
Even if you take all the precautions, jellyfish stings can still occur so it’s good to know some first aid basics. Remove any remaining tentacles, rinse the sting with seawater or vinegar, soak the area in warm water for 30 minutes to release the toxins, and consider using painkillers and seeking medical assistance if you’re experiencing a strong reaction.

]]>Residing roughly one mile deep in the Atlantic Ocean, the glowing octopus utilizes bioluminescence to attract prey. The mesmerizing light displays created by its photophores literally make his food come straight into its mouth. How cool is that?
Platybrachium antarcticum, a predatory sea snail, navigates Antarctic waters with parapodia (i.e., specialized foot extensions) to propel itself. Hunting shelled pteropods for food, this sea creature is not as angelic in behavior as it is in looks.
Chlamydoselachus anguineus, an ancient predator with roots dating back 80 million years, boasts a serpentine swim style and frilly gills. Despite its shark classification, it preys mostly on squid, which it swallows whole.
The nudibranch is a super cool sea slug known for its vibrant camouflage, with over 3,000 known species worldwide. Other than their fabulous looks, these underwater slugs have a unique defense mechanism—they ingest and reuse stinging cells from their prey.

]]>Back in 2021, Wisconsin-based diver Rex Colubra went for a dive at a local lake. There, he came across a smallmouth bass that looked quite friendly. The two ended up spending some time together, and the fish escorted Colubra all the way back to the shore.
After a couple of months, Colubra returned to the same spot in hopes to find the same smallmouth bass. And surprisingly, he did. Since then, the two have had dozens of dives together and became best friends.
Colubra also started documenting his adventures with the fish, now called Elvis, on TikTok. They amassed a huge following, with more than 175K users enjoying their content.
Nowadays, Colubra doesn’t even have to search for Elvis when he wants to hang. He just “calls” him, and the fish recognizes that his friend has arrived. Recently, Elvis needed just two minutes to reach his friend after Colubra called him.
Elvis is also a bit possessive, wanting his human friend all for him. Once another fish approach, he decides to chase them away.

]]>Adams currently runs her small studio Casa Adams Fine Wares from Sydney, but she was actually born in Spain. She was always impressed by her family’s cherished collection of hand-painted antique pottery growing up, so it’s not a surprise she wanted to learn more about pottery in later years.
She learned more about porcelain during her time at NYC’s Greenwich House Pottery, embracing a unique approach to her craft. Her body of work pays homage to the hand-colored 18th-century natural history copperplate engravings, and her illustrations are mono-printed onto the porcelain pieces, with watercolor-like washes of underglaze.
Another common thread that connects all of Adams’ creations is her commitment to capture the wonder and joy of Australia’s biodiversity through her art. The rich biodiverse world of the Land Down Under takes center stage in her work, and many of her pieces feature lobsters, crabs, corals, and fishes inhabiting Australia’s shores and oceans.

]]>Drachuk is the mastermind behind Glass Symphony, and he’s been mastering his craft for over two decades. The Ukrainian glass artist often draws inspiration from nature, crafting glass sculptures inspired by many different animals over the years, and octopuses seem to be his latest obsession.
After figuring out the shapes, Drachuk started experimenting with colors, from electric blues to fiery oranges.
“Each octopus gets its own unique vibe. Some are bold and bright, while others are more subdued with hints of shimmering gold or silver. It’s like they each have their own little personality, staring back at me with those cute glass eyes,” he told Bored Panda.
Drachuk’s glass figurines can be used as decorations, but he believes there’s more to them than meets the eye. He sees them as reminders of the beauty and wonder of the ocean that have the power to transport you to the deep sea and reconnect you with vibrant colors and graceful movements of marine life.
