]]>Heike Kuzminski lives in Coquitlam, Canada with her husband, two sons, and two cats, and her art is often inspired by the natural beauty of her home country. Watercolor and ink are her preferred mediums, and she enjoys using them to create simple and striking compositions.
Running used to be one of her favorite pastimes before she suffered a knee injury, but something good came out of it. She decided to give hiking a shot and paid more attention to the informational signage on the trails once she was no longer in a rush.
She was drawn to birds shown in the pictures, so she started learning more about them, and they quickly became her main subject.
“I participated in the 100-day challenge on Instagram and painted 100 birds in 100 days. There were many requests to paint different birds from all over the world…I try to express the joy these birds bring me by exaggerating and accentuating features that stand out to me,” she explained on her Etsy page.

]]>Only three bird species on Earth produce milk, and pigeons are one of them. Pigeon milk comes from the lining of their crop and is produced by both males and females. It is high in protein and fat while being vital for the growth of chicks.
Pigeons have a great sense of navigation, which is why they were so efficient in their job as messengers. They can travel some 1,300 miles away from home and still find their way back. This will be the case even if they have been transported to an unknown location in isolation. Scientists believe that they are able to do so by using the position of the sun as a compass alongside other methods like memorizing landmarks.
Pigeons have been closely tied to humans for thousands of years. Experts believe that the domestication of pigeons dates back to 4500 BCE and that they might be the first birds to be domesticated by humans.
As we previously mentioned, pigeons can remember important landmarks and later use them as a navigational tool. But their memory is even more remarkable than that. Studies have shown that pigeons can recognize humans they’ve seen before and tell them apart from one another even after a change of clothes.

Your bird will likely spend significant time in its cage, so you want it to be comfortable. Make sure it is big enough for the bird and has enough accessories like toys, swings, bungees, and exercise ladders.
You will have to prepare your home for a bird member of the family because you’ll need to let it fly around on a daily basis to allow them to stay in good mental and physical condition. Make sure to keep all the hazards that could harm the bird, like mirrors, fans, and sources of heat, out of the room that your bird is staying in.
As soon as the sun is out or they hear outside noises, your bird will be up. And don’t expect it to keep quiet just because you are sleeping. Make sure to get used to early wake-up calls, or at least don’t keep your bird in the same room you sleep in.

]]>Called “geese agents,” the birds wander the prison’s green space between the outer wall and the inside fence. Anyone who even thinks of making a run would be met with a resilient goose leader, Piu-Piu, and his flock producing loud noises to alert human guards. Maybe they would even met with physical force by the birds if they were particularly rude.
According to prison director Marcos Roberto de Souza, the prison has all the advanced systems and technology that help them keep inmates in check. However, the added protection of geese is proving to be quite helpful.
De Souza explains that geese’s vigilance and determination make them excellent guard animals. They are not as demanding as dogs while also fitting the prison’s quiet nature.
“Night time is very quiet. Even during the day as you can see it is a very silent place and at night even more so… The space favors this type of security in the case of the geese,” De Souza told Reuters.

]]>In a video that is making rounds on social media, Damosso can be seen opening a mailbox and finding a bird nest inside of it. The nest is full of birds that are enjoying the safety and coziness of their rent-free apartment.
In a chat with The Dodo, Damosso shared some details behind this cool story. According to her, the video was taken in her family’s countryside house, which is empty and mail-free for the better part of the year.
When she opened the mailbox for the first time, Damosso found a nest made of twigs, dry grass, and fur. Inside were tiny eggs of soon-to-be birdies. She decided not to touch them and, after a few days, discovered that the nest had received new residents.
“The first time we found the box occupied, we were shocked because it had never happened before,” Damosso told The Dodo. “It was a thrill.”
Damosso has enjoyed a few peeks now and then but leaves the bird family undisturbed. She made sure to leave a message on the mailbox so the mailman and everyone else know who the real residents are.

“The first birds that usually arrive are the galahs. The Maggies, magpies, do their rounds. Then the kookaburras come at the end of the day. There is a whole family, and they like to come at all very different times,” she shared in a statement for The Dodo.
As we said, all the birds were wild until one day when a bright red parrot appeared. First, he would watch Kat from the gum tree next to the balcony. Then he started to get closer and sit on the balcony, and stare through the window. And then one day he flew over to Kat’s shoulder.
“Since that point, we have become a lot closer. Rupert makes me laugh all the time. He chooses not to fly to you. He chooses to run down the balcony,” she continued. “Rupert’s girlfriend, Greta, always comes along. She is always in the background. She is a very supportive girlfriend.”

]]>In a recent video, he documents the rescuing and hatching of a tiny parakeet egg, as well as feeding and taking care of a baby parrot. The heartwarming nine-minute-long clip has already reached more than 13 million views and counting.
While visiting a local pet shop in the Netherlands, the man noticed a little egg on the floor of the budgie’s cage. However, there was only a male budgie, who couldn’t take care of it. He refused to leave the egg behind, so he asked the owner if he could take the egg with him.
After receiving permission from the owner, he put it into a matchbox and safely delivered it home. Then, he put the egg into an incubator, wondering if he would be able to bring it to life. A few days later, he showed his audience the teeny tiny heartbeat.
When the little bird hatched, it had to be fed eight times a day. As weeks went by, the man couldn’t stop thinking about the bird’s dad. That’s when he decided to bring him back when the little one starts flying.
Now the little family lives together.
