Prison In Brazil Uses Geese Patrol to Prevent Prison Breaks

Dogs move over; there are new guard animals in town. One prison in Brazil, Santa Catarina, is using a geese patrol to monitor its inmates and prevent prison breaks.

Called “geese agents,” the birds wander the prison’s green space between the outer wall and the inside fence. Anyone who even thinks of making a run would be met with a resilient goose leader, Piu-Piu, and his flock producing loud noises to alert human guards. Maybe they would even met with physical force by the birds if they were particularly rude.

According to prison director Marcos Roberto de Souza, the prison has all the advanced systems and technology that help them keep inmates in check. However, the added protection of geese is proving to be quite helpful.

De Souza explains that geese’s vigilance and determination make them excellent guard animals. They are not as demanding as dogs while also fitting the prison’s quiet nature.

“Night time is very quiet. Even during the day as you can see it is a very silent place and at night even more so… The space favors this type of security in the case of the geese,” De Souza told Reuters.
