Mari Brooks works at the Humane Society of Genesee County, Michigan and his 12-year-old son Austin, has also spent much of his free time there for the last two years, volunteering to take the shelter’s dogs on walks and hanging out with cats.

Earlier this month, their family cat passed away and despite being heartbroken over the loss, Austin still continued to visit the shelter. Not long after, the young boy helped the shelter put on a yoga session featuring adoptable kitties. It was there that he met the adorable cat named Gizzard. Brooks instantly noticed her son’s special bond with the black kitten. To surprise Austin, she made arrangements to adopt Gizzard into their family. The perfect opportunity arose when the shelter hosted a holiday event featuring Santa Claus. Austin was there too and he cheerfully joined in on what he thought was just a photo op with Santa and Gizzard. Turns out, it was more than that.

Brooks captured the memorable moment showing Austin’s heartwarming reaction to finding out that he and his new buddy would now be together and will never be apart.

“His reaction was the best thing I have ever seen,” Brooks shared. “Everyone was crying watching this all happen.”

Austin and Gizzard are now inseparable, always hanging out together. “Gizzard sleeps with him every night,” Brooks shared. “He comes running when Austin calls him…They really are best friends!”
